Claude Monet's painting “Water Lilies” is one of the artist’s dazzling and challenging works on the theme - water lilies, which were painted between 1914-1917.

A striking 2-meter square canvas was painted freer and bolder than the earlier versions from 1903-1908.

The artist in the painting “Water Lilies” deviated a little from his revolutionary idea of “describing” nature, and gave his work a more abstract form of painting. In this amazing composition, Monet displayed the rounded islands of yellow and pink water lilies, which are located on the green, purple and dark blue surface of the water.

The artist tried to fully focus on an isolated water surface covered with water lilies, while Monet completely rejected the generally accepted rules of composition and abandoned the concept of horizon. Due to the fact that the water lilies are suddenly cut off by the edges of the canvas, it seems that the work is unfinished and is only a particle of something big.

The use of color in the composition.

- Water layering. During the painting, the artist repeatedly added a new layer of water, after creating the leaves of water lilies. Therefore, we can see in the work careless and rough strokes that overlap the outline of the leaves, purple and mauve, filling the space between the two water lilies.

- Sensations of movement and dynamics give vertical strokes of purple and green. Thanks to this, Monet conveyed the reflection on the surface of the water and the feeling of a large number of tangled algae and roots under water.

- Some sections of an empty, not painted canvas, give the picture a sense of spontaneity, from which the work seems unfinished.

- Water lilies - this is the main element of the picture. Monet painted them in thick and short strokes of pink and yellow. Thus, enhancing the impression of bulk flowers.
