Painting by the famous artist V.I. Surikov's "The Morning of the Archery Execution" is a recognized masterpiece of the author, written in the genre of historical painting. The picture tells of a terrible and bloody event in the history of our country: the reprisal of Tsar Peter over the archers, which formed the basis of the military units of the time, the cruel reprisal, because the archers supported Peter’s sister in the struggle for power - Princess Sophia. At the same time, the artist does not show his spectators the scenes of bloody reprisal, but seeks to talk about the mental state of his heroes in this terrible moment.

In the center of the composition are the figures of the archers themselves and their loved ones. Everyone here behaves differently. A young woman in rich clothes wringes her hands in grief and hopelessness, a child is buried in her clothes - a boy of about five. In an impotence, the old woman sank to the ground, next to her a girl of about four in a red scarf, screaming something unintelligible. Another young woman covered her face with her hands.

One of the archers fell into despair and hung his head, the other - a gray-haired old man - looks at others with an invisible look and cannot believe in the reality of what is happening. The archer’s face with a black long beard is full of internal tension, he gathered all the willpower to withstand the impending execution with honor. And only the red-haired Sagittarius in a red hat with hatred looks towards the young king.

Peter himself, depicted aside, is also tense. He sits on a horse, as if towering above what is happening and watching how his soldiers and officers prepare those sentenced to execution. However, his eyes look with fierce force and tension. He is also full of hatred for the archers, but this hatred is complemented by the awareness of his power in this difficult moment.

The old and new Russia clashed in the picture, and one must be destroyed so that the second can gain strength, and this is Russia of Peter, the great and terrible Russian Tsar Reformer.
