Painted in 1891, during Shishkin’s creative heyday, the painting “Rain in the Oak Forest” was thought out to the smallest detail and is probably one of the most impeccable, stunning works of the author and resembles a high-quality photograph.
The canvas depicts an oak grove through which a path well-groomed by many people passes. There is warm summer rain, and the air in the forest becomes fresh and cool. A man and a woman, a married couple, walk slowly under an umbrella, and a man walks a little ahead, most likely this is the author of the picture, who, having felt drops of rain on himself, opens an umbrella. The accuracy that is traditional for the artist’s landscapes in the details in this picture reaches the highest level: the entire depth of the grove’s space is conveyed as much as possible with the help of the difference between the clear trees in front of us and the blurry trees - in the background, which, when removed deeper into the grove, lose color and merge with the silver-gray haze.
Rain summer, mushroom. We draw this conclusion due to the saturation of colors in the foliage of trees and grass. If you look closely, you can see how a ray of sunlight breaks through a rainy veil and illuminates every pebble and blade of grass, is reflected by rays in puddles and creates golden halos near the tree trunks in the distance, and nearby there are small glare on each leaf on which it falls.
Unlike several harsh paintings that Shishkin painted in the last years of his life, in Rain in an Oak Forest, he enjoys the diversity and beauty of the world around him and invites the viewer to plunge into this summer landscape, forgetting about all the problems and hardships of life. All this ease and charm of the picture is achieved by the great skill of its author. In it, he revealed his full creative potential, masterfully conveying all the subtleties, the play of light and shadow, as well as the entire palette of shades of the summer grove in the rain.
