The end of the summer. For village peasants, this is the time when all household chores are forgotten and the whole family goes out into the field. So the artist just wrote that very time. Ahead as befits the eldest in the family. He starts mowing, and he started the wife and children in the field further.

There is work, hard work. It is necessary to catch it before the weather, and it certainly will, because the clouds are gathering in the sky, and the birds are flying quite low. Here you are certainly not mistaken, they fly low - to the rain. And to work with the whole family is handy, you will not miss anything - everything will be collected until the last spikelet. Adults will not see, so the small ones will see, all at once in a sheaf and folded.

The artist Myasoedov often used just such plans, peasant household. And this is not a desire to be closer to the people. This is exactly when you want to tell something understandable.

And then everything is clear: the family is in a haymaking, in a hurry to quickly collect what was sown and carefully grown. So far, really bad weather has not played out. Rain spoils the hay, spoils the grain and how much in vain all the work will be. And there Father Golod will not keep itself waiting, if, of course, that does not go well.

And after all, how exactly the artist described everything. As I caught something elusive in the confident movements of the mowers, and most importantly, if you noticed that the work was almost finished. And this means that all the same they managed to harvest before the weather. And this means that in winter there will be something to serve.

In general, it was thanks to such artists as Myasoedov that the metropolitan audience suddenly found out that there was also life outside the city. After all, there were those who lived all their lives in the city and did not even pull their nose out of the city. For such, this canvas was wild and unusual, and most importantly, even offensive. And there were indignations. Say that there was no one else to draw?

Myasoedov just shrugged and smiled. Apparently no one. But for him, it was precisely those whom he portrayed who were people, and not these metropolitan “things”.

Have you noticed yet another pitchfork lying to the side, in the lower right corner of the canvas? Maybe this is an artist.
