Isaac Levitan is a Russian painter of the 19th and turn of the 20th centuries, known for his canvases reflecting the beauty and the whole essence of Russian nature.

Levitan’s paintings began to be very successful during the artist’s life, which undoubtedly testifies to the great talent of the painter, who is able, with the help of simple paints, to convey that inexhaustible life-giving force inherent in nature at any time of the year, which even today few people can capture even with a photo lens.

The painting "Spring. Last Snow ”was written by the artist in 1895 just 5 years before his death. On the canvas there is a small rivulet, barely free of ice, but ready to pour its waters on the banks surrounding it.

Spring has just begun, nature has not yet managed to wake up from the winter cold and hibernation, and only the river has cast off its shackles. Snow-white snow is covered with gray spots and gradually disappears, the trees are bare, but already awakening.

Birch trees visible in the distance beyond the forest are ready to be covered with the first spring buds. The sun is shining, its rays are not visible, but to understand this is quite simple according to the light that comes from the blue sky, and from the stormy river and even from melting snow.

The artist’s skill allowed him to give, in general, the gloomy landscape of the charm of early spring, which is noticeable only to a true lover of nature, because very soon, the banks of the river will be covered with grass, and the edge of the forest will drown in flowers, the first birds will arrive and the long-awaited warmth will come.

It is this moment that the picture is looking forward to, and I want to look at what will happen next, how this wonderful transformation will happen, to which the artist prepares us with such care, the brush of which each tree, each twig and mound is so distinctly painted. A bright, colorful and spiritualistic picture is ranked among one of the best examples of pictorial art in Russia and the world.
