During his life, the famous artist Nikolai Nikolayevich Ge painted a great many works. Among them were paintings on religious topics, works describing historical events, beautiful landscapes. Some of his works were considered the pinnacles of Russian creativity, some were completely not recognized, but absolutely everything was impressed with the artist’s ability to truly portray portraits.

N. N. Ge was a very bright artist and personality. His contribution to the development of realistic painting and landscapes is truly huge. All his works are distinguished by special sincerity and nobility. And portraits painted with his brush, captivate with its simplicity, truth and color severity. In them, the artist tried to capture all that spiritual wealth and complexity of the life of any person. Each portrait he paints reflects his own noble soul.

The author’s self-portrait was written by him in the last years of his life. Most experts consider this work an apotheosis of portraiture by Nikolai Nikolaevich. His work is ranked among the best examples of Russian portraiture of the 19th century.

In his work, he captured his expressive and spiritual face of the master, on which the imprint of years already lived lies on the shadow. Its appearance seems to be torn out of the absorbing darkness by a ray of light, thanks to the lighting unevenly distributed over the picture. His stern and thoughtful look looks directly into the viewer's eyes.

Wisdom and kindness overwhelm him. But at the same time, Nikolai Nikolayevich seemed to be tormenting, worrying. Some unresolved issues before they sat down turned his inner peace. The portrait reflected the entire spiritual world of the author, who spent his whole life in search of moral perfection. The portrait immortalized his senile wisdom and beauty.
