This picture saw the world in Madrid in 1657. The canvas can be divided into two parts, in the foreground weavers carry out their quiet work, and in the background is the result of their activity - a large carpet on the wall with a picture of a scene on a religious theme.

In the center of the picture work is in full swing, without ceasing for a second. The picture is saturated with dynamics - each weaver is busy with her own business. One collects fallen threads on the floor, the other, the one with rolled up sleeves, spins a new work of art. Most likely the artist wanted to show his enthusiasm for the work process.

Opposite a woman with rolled up sleeves, obviously, an elderly weaver sitting lazily leading a conversation with a young assistant. Near the old woman, as if feeling life experience and good coming from her, a domestic cat was located at her feet.

Velazquez depicted the usual workplace without embellishment and pathos. No theatrical movements, only accurate and confident movements of weavers. By the amount of light in the room, we can assume that the workers were late until late in the evening. Their tired appearance is also indicated by the abstraction from the work of an elderly woman and ancillary women, who allowed a little chat at the end of the day.

A few words need to be said about the tapestry in the background: the artist depicted the moment of the wrath of the Lord when he turned Arachne into a creeping reptile. Some historians believe that at this moment Velazquez wanted to uncover the political game of Spain (there are other speculations, for example, the triumph of the divine warrior), which completely commands people.

Thus, the picture belongs to the best works of art of that time. It reflects not only the hard work of the weavers, but also the whole injustice of the political structure of the monarchy or the righteousness of God's Court, who knows.
