Vinogradov is one of the Wanderers, and his portrayal of peasant life is quite natural. The picture depicts small shepherds crowded around a fire.
Cows graze around - white and two spotted with black sides - an autumn sad grove sways in the breeze. From the dying bonfire, gray smoke stretches to the side, and the children sit so as not to breathe it. There are six of them. Four boys are sitting right on the ground. One reclines, leaning on his elbow, and watching the smoldering branches covered with ashes.
The second draws something with his fingers on the ground, his head is lowered, he looks lost in some sort of heavy thought. The third one also looks into the fire, he is dressed in dark clothes, sitting on his heels. The fourth (it seems the smallest) is dressed in bright blue clothes and sits with one leg thrown back, and he reaches for the fire. A fifth boy stands above the rest. The cap is crookedly clipped to his head, a bag hangs over his shoulder - there must be supplies for the whole day.
A little to the side, looking down, a girl stands - that she is a girl can only be understood by the red scarf, which is a little big for her. On the side things are dumped - some knots, belongings, and the children look a little homeless in the middle of the gray autumn landscape.
Above them is a convex sky that looks like it is protruding from a picture. It is covered in clouds and therefore it has extremely different colors. Rare red and orange leaves hang on bushes and trees, the same on the ground and much more than on the branches. Adults at the harvest. The latter is removed from the fields, and children who, due to age, cannot handle the scythe, cannot tie a sickle or dig deep, look after the cows. Those, unlike the kids, look quite satisfied. They roam around, bend their heads to the ground, look for especially tasty grass.
In the evening, when it begins to get dark, it will become more fun. You can tell terrible tales, and then you can go home, in warm huts.
In the meantime, the children just wait, do not even play. The picture shows the tragedy of peasant children - they have no time to play.
